Veterinary Care
On every raceday the Authority’s Veterinary Officers and Veterinary Technicians are present.

Veterinary Officers provide oversight of horse welfare and advise the Stewards on the enforcements of Veterinary related rules. Regulatory responsibilities include:
  • Drug testing procedures
  • Identification of horses
  • Monitoring of horses to ensure the equipment they have is correct
  • Examination of horses as and when requested to do so by the stewards.
The Equine Science and Welfare Department sets the requirements for experience and competence for the Veterinary Surgeons provided by the racecourses, and sets the standards for veterinary facilities. Veterinary Officers also work with these Veterinary Surgeons provided by the racecourse to ensure clinical care.

An important focus of the Veterinary role is the monitoring and assessment of injuries and fatalities and research to reduce them.

The Authorities Veterinary Staff remain alert to the threat of equine disease; not only can this affect the horse’s welfare, it can also stop racing.
